Birdwatching

Birdwatching in Jurilovca: the reed beds, channels and lakes around the village are home to a great many species of water birds.

What you can see

Pelicans (great white and Dalmatian), egrets, cormorants, herons and many other water birds that find food and shelter in the reed beds. You’ll find more about pelicans on Wikipedia.

Where

On the channels and lakes around Lake Razelm, best of all by boat, on guided trips with stops at the bird colonies.

When to go birdwatching

  • Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), during the migration seasons
  • Summer, around the nesting and feeding areas

Who to go with

You’ll see the birds best from a boat, on guided trips along the channels with stops at the bird colonies. Local boatmen Vali (0724 178 299) and Adi (0723 310 692) will take you out. A trip usually lasts 2–4 hours, and the price is agreed directly, depending on the length and the route.

Tell them you found them on Turist în Jurilovca.

What to bring for birdwatching

  • binoculars: the most important thing
  • a light windproof jacket for the boat ride
  • insect repellent, especially in summer and in the evening, near the reed beds
  • a hat, sunglasses and sun cream
  • cash for the boatmen
